Welcome to CAMWS Southern Section

What is CAMWS Southern Section?

Since 1920, members of CAMWS who reside in the Southern states (MO, AR, TX, LA, OK, KY, TN, MS, AL, WV, VA, NC, SC, GA, FL) have enjoyed a separate organization (with no additional dues) called the Southern Section. The primary purpose is to provide an additional meeting opportunity in the South in alternate years, when the CAMWS meeting is in the Northern states; these meetings are held in the fall, generally in October. In addition, the Southern Section works closely with the officers of CAMWS to promote the study of Classics in the states of the Southern Section, including strengthening of ties between schools and colleges, and donation of funds for scholarships and government advocacy. A group membership is also maintained in the Southern Humanities Council.

The 106th Anniversary Meeting of CAMWS-SS:

Reimagining CAMWS Southern Section: Fall Forum 2026

Saturday, October 31 st
11 am – 1 pm EDT on Zoom.

What would your ideal conference look like? The organizers of CAMWS Southern Section want to know!

You are invited, therefore, to participate in an online brainstorming session this October to share perspectives and offer new ideas for how a biennial meeting of the CAMWS Southern Section could look.

Our goal is to create a new CAMWS-SS that is welcoming and responsive to the needs of students, teachers, and faculty early and established. We want this to be a conference you are excited to attend.

This Fall Forum meetup will be on Saturday, October 31st at 11-1pm. In advance of this session, we would like to get some input. Please click here to fill out our survey and share your thoughts.

Here are some initial questions to get you thinking:

>>>How can we design a conference that builds community, serves as an incubator for new ideas, and provides space for us to address the challenges our field faces across all educational levels?

>>>In this age of online interactions and AI-influenced work, how can we emphasize the “human” in the humanities?

>>>What new activities or formats do you think might be worth trying? What tried and true elements of conferences do you think should stay?

To ensure the Fall Forum is focused and incorporates your views, we ask everyone—regardless of whether or not you can attend!—to click here to fill out the poll.

We look forward to hearing from you and hopefully seeing you in October! The meeting link will be posted the week before the meeting!
